Charleston shines year round, and her winter is the unsung hero of her seasons! While we do experience freezing temps and icy bridges, snow is rare and our winters are mild enough to continue playing outdoors. Here are some of our favorite local cold-weather activities!
Bonfires and oyster roasts - whether at your own home, Bowens Island or the oyster festival at Boone Hall, oysters are the most delicious in winter months.
Host a dinner party - enjoying the coziness of your home is perfect this time of year.
For going out to eat, the romantic Wild Olive is a perfect setting. Lost Isle on Johns Island is another favorite for winter weekends. It's a great place to bundle up and meet friends for a meal outdoors.
Attend cultural events like theater, symphony and art galleries. Or check out the Candlelight Concert series at the Unitarian Church.
Movies - catching a film at The Terrace theater in James Island's Riverland Terrace neighborhood is like a step back in time. They have the BEST selection of concessions!
Holiday Lights at the James Island County Park - the traffic is heavy, so plan to go early and pack a picnic to enjoy in the car or fill a truck bed with hay bales to ride through.
American Gardens - take a ride on the carousel or gaze at the massive Christmas tree in this pocket park downtown.
Shopping - the perfect season for supporting local shops. Stop in a local book shop, like Ladybird Books on King Street.
Heated rooftop bars are perfect for winter skylines, like Vendu, The Watch, or Citrus Club.
Top Golf in North Charleston near the outlets is a hit and the bays have heaters.
Tea time! Many of our hotels and tea rooms offer full tea service to keep you warm.
