2025 Design Trends
The 2025 home design trends continue to move towards personality driven design full of color, patterns and various design aesthetics. This is a continuation of the move away from the monotonous gray trends that dominated in the 2010s and whites of the early 2020s. Blending old and new design aesthetics is a great way to display personality in the pieces that are most important and meaningful in your home. This year’s fisherman aesthetic is the perfect example of mixing classic and modern and a trend that is very fitting for the Lowcountry! Blending this trend with a move to earthy tones and texture creates cozy, timeless vibes. Here are the trends we are following in 2025.
Fisherman Aesthetic
If your first thought here is tacky anchors, seashells and ropes at every corner, think again. This design trend is more classic, laid back and effortless, perfect for the Lowcountry. The fisherman look embraces layered elegance that's relaxed and functional. How to achieve this look?
Blend natural materials like dark wood, weathered metals like brass, and traditional patterns. Opt for colors and hues you’d find on the coast like washed blues, sandy beiges, seafoam greens, and deep browns. For patterns, start with stripes, but stick to sophisticated stripes, not the kitschy nautical look. Avoid the wide navy and crisp white nautical stripes you may be thinking of. Choose stripes in varying sizes and thickness in natural, muted tones. To finish out your space, complete the look with brass and copper metal accents.
To fill your space, maritime motifs such as landscapes, fish prints, sailboats, rope details, need not be avoided altogether, but the key is not to go overboard, pun intended! Choose high-end pieces from local antique shops and boutiques, luckily that is easy to do around Charleston. The fisherman aesthetic isn’t about cutesy anchors and cheap nick-nacks, it’s about timeless design with a nod to life on the coast.
Moody Earth Tones
Implementing the fisherman aesthetic’s earthy tones is the continued trend toward more natural paint colors. For walls, we are still seeing the beige (but not yellow) trend continue. Here are my top paint recommendations to achieve the look:
Brown is also making a come back as a top trend of 2025 in fashion and at home. Brown is the perfect blend of warm, rich tones and moody, earthy vibes. Sherwin Williams’ paint color of the year is Grounded.
However, as with all trends, I recommend starting small. Paint a small bathroom or vanity or stick to styling with brown decor like pillows, rugs, brown leathers and dark wood furniture before you commit to a whole room.
Textured Walls
As we have seen for the past few years, textured walls are giving homes more warmth and character. We are seeing a comeback of plaster, limewash and grass cloth wallpaper. Texture on walls does not have to be bold. It can be a subtle finish to add coziness and depth. Plaster is perfect for small accents like a range hood or fireplace. Limewash is great in small rooms like a half bath or foyer. And grass cloth can provide an elevated traditional look in a formal dining room or den.
Floral Return
Speaking of wallpaper, floral wallpaper seems to be having a moment! Staying on the trend of bringing the outdoors in, floral wallpaper is the perfect way to do so. Again, start small and compliment a busy pattern with coordinating solid color palettes. Like matching a solid color vanity with a whimsical floral wallpaper in a half bath. Or by taking wood paneling halfway up the wall so that the wallpaper does not overwhelm the space.
As always, I am happy to weigh in on your next project to provide guidance and help create your vision. I truly believe your home should be a reflection of your personality, so have fun and do what feels right to you!
