2024 Design Trends

We are continuing to see design trends move away from the all white and all gray everythings of the past 10 years and move back to warmer, more personality-driven design. And dare I say we’re nearing the end of shiplap and maximum open floor plans? Here are our favorite design trends for 2024!

Cozy, Warm Neutrals

As we predicted last year, cool grays and stark whites are moving out. Warm neutrals, such as beiges, creamy off-whites and rich browns, are moving in. Softer neutrals bring a calmer, more welcoming environment and allow for more personality in the home. Designers recommend using different tones, as well as textures and patterns, to create a layered look that adds depth to home design. Here are some of our recent favorite warm neutrals for wall color:

Sherwin Williams Pearly White

Sherwin Williams White Duck

Sherwin Williams Shoji White

Sherwin Williams Natural Linen

Sherwin Williams Shiitake

Painted Wood Paneling, Goodbye to Shiplap?

There is an ongoing debate as to when the shiplap trend will be over. My opinion is that variations of shiplap will always be desirable, especially painted paneling, but the overdone pure white shiplap look is on the way out. Wood paneling adds texture and depth to a space and painting it an inviting color to match the style of the home will move us away from the white shiplap trend of the last 10 years.

Fluted Details

This is a trend I am seeing everywhere - accenting bathroom vanities, the backs and sides of kitchen islands and living room furniture. The aesthetic creates a “rough statement-making detail beneath island countertops, bathroom vanities and dining room tables, adding visual texture and interest,” Houzz says. Although I love the look and agree it adds nice understated texture, I believe this will be a short lived trend. As with all trends, I recommend starting in a small space and not doing anything too permanent that you cannot easily remove. Start with furnishings and other accents that are not attached to the home.

Appliance Garages

As a home stager, this is one of my favorite trends that I hope is here to stay. One of our first rules of staging is to remove everything from the surfaces of your counters that create clutter. Appliance garages serve as a great solution to hiding those small appliances like air fryers and blenders, meant to sit on your countertop. An appliance garage allows easy access while also offering up a sliding cabinet or specialized cabinets to hide all the gadgets.

Move Away from “Wide Open Spaces”

You may be shocked to hear me say this, but I think we are at the beginning of a move away from open floor plans. Can you imagine a day when home buyers may want to put up walls rather than taking them down?? It is hard to believe but buyers are beginning to express a desire for more division in their homes to create privacy, defined and cozy spaces. The work from home movement made people realize that working from the living room while your spouse is doing the dishes may not be the most ideal floor plan! I do not think we will swing all the way back to the 50s and 60s with multiple small obsolete rooms with small doorways, but rather the illusion of division with wide doorways, accent walls, knee walls and even glass walls.

My Favorite Design Aesthetic Trend for 2024: Country Club

The 90’s child in me loves the nostalgic vibes of the “country club grandpa” aesthetic. This is like a modern take on Kevin McAllister's Home Alone house. Think Ralph Lauren, Princess Diana vibes - elegant patterned textiles, rich colors, and heavy trim. This trend is definitely a reflection of the desire to move away from cold grays and whites and back to more warmth and personality in your home.

What’s Out: open shelving overload, jewel tones, sliding barn doors, all gray everything, all white everything!
