The Grit Counter

Self-serve, casual and low key establishment

We are big fans of Grace and Grit. The owner/chef Frank Kline was in B.V.’s Wando class, and we are thrilled for his success.  When the neighboring coffee shop closed, Frank expanded into the space for a casual lunch option called “The Grit Counter.” I have been twice now, and it is a formula for success. The restaurant sits at the foot of the bridge in Mt Pleasant and makes a great setting for working lunches.

It’s self-serve and low key. You order at the counter, grab your drink at the beverage bar, and take a seat until you order is called. On both visits the service has been prompt. There is no server, and a tip jar sits at the counter. There is outside seating for when the weather is nice.

Traditional shrimp and grits - no frills and full of flavor

Now for the food! It is Dede-licious! Their trademark dish is the grit bowl with various toppings. Frank’s trademark grits are gently flavored to complement each bowl. We tried the Southern Fried Chicken Bowl with crispy fried chicken and collards. The Shrimp and Grits was delicious over a bed of gouda grits. The gouda makes the grits especially creamy on flavorful.

In true Dede fashion, I made a new friend while there! He was in town from southwest Florida and has been to the restaurant three times during his visit. He had ordered the daily special brunch bowl and said it was wonderful.

There are plenty of other options for those “from off” who are averse to grits, but we can’t resist the perfectly cooked plump, fluffy corn morsels – otherwise known as “Georgia Ice Cream.”
